The author, an aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene during the Revolution, edited and arranged these remembrances and anecdotes. Essentially, the book is a collection of sketches of the lives and activities of over 150 individuals during the Revolution. Included are articles on commanders, officers, soldiers killed in the war in the South, survivors of the Revolution, officers and soldiers of Lee's Legion, distinguished characters in civil life, the clergy, the French allies, naval officers, ladies on both sides, British officers, and general suffering and hardships of the troops and civilian population. While the book concentrates on people and events in South Carolina, there is material pertaining to North Carolina and Georgia, as well as other parts of the country. The book provides an interesting expression of the image of the American Revolution expressed during the 19th century and is a valuable document on an important aspect of American culture during that time.
